LANAP®

The Laser Alternative to Gum Surgery

Our doctors are among the few, leading-edge periodontists in the region to offer patients the LANAP® gum disease treatment procedure.  The PerioLase MVP-7 Laser is the only FDA approved laser to treat gum disease with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®).

How LANAP Works

This is a minimally invasive periodontal procedure like no other, with a pulsing laser which is absorbed by infected and inflamed tissue. The diseased tissue and bacteria which have a darker pigment than healthy tissue are ”zapped” away by the laser, leaving behind only healthy gum tissue.

LANAP® then helps connective tissue and bone form between the gums and teeth. This evidence-based protocol provides consistent, reproducible, positive bone-building results to reverse gum disease.

The laser can also seal the gums, creating a physical barrier that blocks any bacteria or tissue that could recreate a gum pocket, eliminating the need for sutures.

What Are The Benefits?

The benefits of LANAP® include less pain, less gum recession, decreased bleeding, swelling, and root sensitivity, and less downtime after treatment.

An added benefit of laser surgery is the antibacterial effect that helps disinfect the periodontal pockets. Controlling periodontal disease with LANAP® makes it possible to save and restore otherwise hopeless teeth.

Our doctors provide patients with a target goal score (MMPPI Index), which provides an evidence-based prognosis of the whole mouth from a periodontal standpoint for 15 and 30 years, similar to knowing your cholesterol and hemoglobin A1c scores.

Laser treatment is also beneficial for patients who have medical problems requiring medications such as aspirin, Plavix, and Coumadin. Since LANAP® causes almost no bleeding compared to traditional surgeries, patients do not have to discontinue using these drugs prior to surgery.

Patients with advanced periodontal disease who take bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, can avoid extractions, thus minimizing the possibility of osteonecrosis of the jaw. LANAP® is also safe for patients with HIV, hemophilia or diabetes.

LAPIP® Laser Treatment for Implant Complications

The longevity of your dental implants relies on maintaining healthy gum tissue around the implants. Unfortunately, a small number of patients experience complications due to bacteria-causing inflammation or bleeding around the implant that requires immediate treatment. This complication is known as peri-implantitis or peri-implant disease.

A modification of the LANAP® procedure called LAPIP® (Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure) also uses the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser technology and can be used for non-surgical treatment of infections around implants without removing the ailing or failing implant.

LAPIP removes the infection and helps to regrow bone without harming healthy tissue. This innovative procedure offers an exciting and promising option for patients because maintaining and even healing ailing implants reduces the need for more invasive surgeries, and in the worst-case scenario, implant replacement.

The entire process can be done in a single appointment. Plus, like with LANAP®, patients experience significantly shorter recovery times. If you think you may be suffering from peri-implantitis, please make an appointment today to discuss this innovative treatment option.
